Brod Tecnologia spreads its wings

The evolution of free and open source software in Brazil, and its impact around the world, has a tight relationship with a small company located in a small town in the southernmost state of the Country. Brod Tecnologia was founded in 1999 by Cesar Brod, who had previously worked as an IT consultant, sales manager, marketing and technical analyst for the financing industry in companies such as Compaq, Tandem, CPM and others.

While providing consulting services for Univates, an University Centre in the south of Brazil, Brod envisioned a business model that would allow young, graduate students to make a living out of free software. Solis, a free software services co-operative was then created in 2003. Under the direct management of Brod Tecnologia, a couple of important software products were developed, such as the academic administration system SAGU and the library automation and circulation management system Gnuteca.

Now that Solis has become a mature company and a proven business model, Cesar Brod decided to dedicate his time for new ventures with Brod Tecnologia. Joice Käfer, one of Solis co-founders, who was working part time for Brod Tecnologia since its foundation, joined Brod Tecnologia as a partner. "What we have to offer to our customers is the knowledge we have aquired in integrating free and open source software alternatives into their IT strategy, preserving investments and seamlessly connecting with their legacy systems and solutions.", says Cesar Brod. "Other than that, we can also help companies willing to develop business models that can rely on open source software to become more profitable.", complements Joice Käfer.
